Abstract

The focus of this study is to highlight the prevalence of genotypic and phenotypic factors that cause resistance in isolated bacteria from gastroenteritis patients. This is achieved by extracting DNA, detecting resistance genes and performing Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST). A total of 40 samples were analyzed, of which 7.5% tested positive for the CTX-M-1 and CTX-M-2 genes. Regarding AST, 100% of the samples were resistant to Tetracycline, Gentamicin, and Ciprofloxacin; 97.5% were resistant to Cefotaxime, 92.5% were resistant to Ampicillin, and 75% were resistant to Amoxicillin with Clavulanic Acid. Despite a high resistance index, cases of sensitivity in some samples were observed. The findings underscore the alarming state of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, society should reconsider its habits regarding drug consumption, which presents a viable alternative to prevent the emergence of new multi-resistant bacteria.
