SAE Aerodesign competition has been held annually in São José dos Campos since 1999. The small-sized aircrafts are built by teams of undergraduate students from the main engineering universities in Brazil and abroad. The aircraft must have a high structural efficiency and maximum load capacity according to the design requirements provided by the competition. The "Trem Ki Voa" team from Federal University of São João del-Rei participated in this competition in 2009 by designing a high-wing monoplane and bi-plane empennage aircraft with tricycle landing gear. This work presents the structural design of the landing gear including the material development and the manufacturing processes through the use of finite element method and mechanical testing in order to verify and validate the device. In addition, the landing gear must provide a combination of damping factor and minimal deflection under maximum load. A hybrid composite was set based on the structural analysis ensuring the required properties. The one-dimensional and two-dimensional models showed similar results. The methodology was essential to obtain a structure with desirable performance and facilitate the development of future projects.
