Abstract

The bagasse from the milling is the largest byproduct of sugar cane. It is estimated that about 12 million tonnes of bagasse are produced annually, with approximately 320 kg per ton of cane. According to Conab - Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (National Company of Supplying), 623.9 million tonnes of the product were milled in the 2010/2011 harvest. Currently, bagasse has several applications in the Brazilian economy, such as: in animal feed, due to its high concentration of nutrients, besides optimizing the digestion of cattle; in the production of hydroponic corn, also destined for animal feed; as biomass for production of fuel; in perhaps the most targeted product, energy cogeneration; in cosmetics industry, and in civil engineering. This study aims to evaluate the various methods of bagasse utilization, focusing on updates about that vast market, through a literature review.
